My engine is going to be something different. The foundation is a brand new Ford Racing 5.0L short block. This is one of the left over Explorer units Ford hard when they switched from the 5.0L to the 4.6L in the Explorers. There was no sense in a rebuilt short block when I could have a completely new one for a couple of hundred dollars more. The heads are also brand new. They are GT40P heads I found at a shop in Florida. These are considered to be the best cast iron heads Ford made. The port and chamber design provide an excellent swirl effect and with the spark plug positioned in the center of the chamber. While the plug angle makes header fit difficult, I feel the advantages of the head for power are worth it. I’m also using the EDIS8 system from the Explorer to do away with the distributor and provide a rock solid timing signal to the computer. The computer will have to be the MegaSquirt system. I need something I can completely program myself to handle this engine.
Recently, I found some guys who have used junkyard parts to build some rather powerful turbo charger systems, even a twin turbo. Because I will have lots of room in my engine bay this is a very tempting option that I am actively exploring. Single or twin will be determined by my ability to keep A/C. Since a turbo increases power with also no loss of gas mileage, it almost a no-brainer.
